MG Maestro Turbo
Tickford played a significant role in the development of the MG Maestro Turbo. Produced in a limited run of 500 units, plus 5 demonstrators, this model was powered by a 2-liter turbocharged engine with an intercooler, producing 152PS. This made it the fastest MG of its era.
The Maestro Turbo was assembled at Rover’s Cowley facility before being sent to Tickford’s Bedworth plant. There, the cars received a distinctive five-piece body kit and graphics. This kit included fiberglass front and rear bumpers with integrated driving lamps, full-length side skirts, and a roof-level tailgate spoiler. The body kit, along with the side mirrors, grille, and side moldings, was color-coded to match the car. Tickford’s contributions extended beyond aesthetics; they were heavily involved in the engine development and suspension tuning.
The car was unveiled at the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show, attracting considerable attention. Of the 500 production cars, the color distribution was as follows:
- 215 in Flame Red
- 149 in British Racing Green
- 92 in Diamond White
- 49 in Factory Black
Interestingly, the Flame Red models featured a black insert strip, whereas the other colors had a red insert. To maintain the exclusivity of this model, any spare body kits were destroyed.
The MG Maestro Turbo boasted impressive specifications:
- Engine: 2.0-litre turbocharged with intercooler
- Max Power: 152PS
- Top Speed: Around 130 mph
- 0-60 mph: Approximately 6.7 seconds
Inside, the Maestro Turbo was equipped with a special velour interior with a red leather flash.” The rear panel included fog and reversing lights, a front spoiler and bumper, a small chrome grille, and side moldings to complete the bodywork with 14in alloy wheels.
Tickford’s involvement in the MG Maestro Turbo project was extensive, ensuring it stood out not only in performance but also in style and comfort. The list price for the MG Maestro Turbo was £13,529, making it a coveted model among enthusiasts. Even today, it remains a significant piece of automotive history.
